What are Menstrual Disorders?

Menstrual disorders are problems with a woman’s regular period. They are one of the most common reasons women visit their gynecologist.

These disorders can affect a woman’s daily life and sometimes make it harder to get pregnant.

Types of Menstrual Disorders

Common types of menstrual disorders include:
1) Abnormal uterine bleeding: Excessive or long periods.
2) Amenorrhea: Missing periods.
3) Oligomenorrhea: Light or infrequent periods.
4) Fibroids: Non-cancerous tumors in the uterus.
5) Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): Physical and emotional discomfort before periods.
6) Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): Severe discomfort before periods.

What causes Menstrual Disorders?

Menstrual disorders can be caused by:
1) Uterine fibroids.
2) Hormonal imbalances.
3) Blood clotting issues.
4) Cancer.
5) Sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
6) Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where cysts form on the ovaries.
7) Genetics.

What are the symptoms of Menstrual Disorders?

Symptoms may include:
1) Unusual bleeding (heavy or very light periods).
2) Pain or cramps.
3) Depression.
4) Headaches.
5) Emotional distress.
6) Bloated or full feeling in the abdomen.

If your periods are too frequent (less than 21 days apart), not frequent enough (more than three months apart), or last longer than 10 days, talk to your doctor.
